With every spray, my intention is that you feel more held, more rooted, and more surrounded by the quiet strength and sweetness of the forest and prairie that inspired it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSmudging is a sacred ceremony shared by many Indigenous Nations, including Cree people, with teachings and protocols that are specific to each Nation, family, and community. At its heart, smudging is a way to cleanse, ground, and connect, clearing away heavy or unwanted energy, inviting in balance, and making space for prayer, gratitude, and good intentions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTraditional smudge medicines each carry their own spirit and role.  \u003cbr\u003eFor many Cree people and other Nations on the prairies and across Turtle Island, these may include:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSage-\u003c\/strong\u003e A powerful cleansing medicine, often used to wash away negativity, worry, or emotional heaviness. Sage helps to clear the mind and heart so we can come into ceremony, conversation, or daily life in a more grounded, respectful way.  \u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSweetgrass-\u003c\/strong\u003eSometimes called the “hair of Mother Earth,” sweetgrass is braided, dried, and burned to bring in goodness after cleansing. Its sweet, gentle scent is used to invite kindness, good spirits, prayers, and connection.  \u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCedar and Spruce-\u003c\/strong\u003e Forest medicines used for protection, grounding, and strength. Cedar and spruce can help create a safe, steady space, reminding us of our relationship to the land, the trees, and our ancestors.  \u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eOther local medicines-\u003c\/strong\u003eDepending on territory and teachings, this might include plants like sagebrush, juniper, tobacco, or other local relatives that are gathered with care and ceremony.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTraditionally, these medicines are dried and burned so that the smoke can wash over a person, place, or object. That smoke carries our prayers and intentions upward, and helps us release what no longer serves us. Smudging is about relationship—to the plants, to the land, to spirit, and to each other.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eToday, many people don’t always have access to open flame or smoke. Some live or work in places with strict fire codes, smoke alarms, shared ventilation, or sensitivities to smoke. Others may be in hospitals, schools, offices, airplanes, or apartments where burning medicines isn’t allowed. In these situations, some Indigenous people choose to use smudge-inspired sprays as a respectful alternative when true smudging with smoke isn’t possible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese sprays are usually made with water, alcohol, plant infusions, and essential oils from medicines like sage, cedar, spruce, and sweetgrass. The intention is not to replace ceremony, but to carry the spirit and teachings of those medicines into a form that can be used safely in modern settings.
